Henry Casebolt (January 9, 1816-September 23, 1892) was a Virginia blacksmith who emigrated to San Francisco with his family in 1851. Initially, he engaged in blacksmithing and carriage-making. He then went into partnership with David Kerr and established a large shop on the corner of Fifth and Market streets. In this new shop the first railroad cars used in San Francisco were built. Casebolt was the inventor of the device by which one cable car is enabled to cross a transverse cable line. In 1865, he built an Italianate manor house on Pacific Heights (2727 Pierce Street, between Vallejo and Green), which still stands today. He was married to Susan R. (Goodrich) Casebolt (1818-1905) and had nine children.
